What is the difference between competency-based and time-based apprenticeships and traineeships?
Competency-based training is mainly concerned with what a person can do as a result of their training and experience. This means that the time to complete a competency-based apprenticeship or traineeship is flexible. For example, where an apprenticeship used to take four years to complete, an apprentice or trainee can now complete it sooner, depending on when they can demonstrate the required skills (competencies). For time-based apprenticeships and traineeships, the training contract operates for a specified term. Your training organisation (supervising registered training organisation) will be able to advise you if the chosen apprenticeship or traineeship is competency-based or time-based.
