As their main function is for the fighting of infections, their life is determined on whether or not their are pathogens or other invasive micro-organisms present. In a normal, healthy person the leukocytes will live for a few years. In the case of infection, there will be more produced, and they will be attacking the bacteria/virus/etc and ill be killed in the process, so their life spans will be around a few seconds/minutes/days or weeks.
