What is Telepresence?
Whether you are new to video conferencing or are looking to upgrade your current solution, you have probably come across the term ‘telepresence’ in your research. Telepresence is a groundbreaking telecommunications offering which is setting new standards for visual collaboration. A virtual meeting experience unlike any other, telepresence creates the illusion that remote participants are in the same room together. This effect is created by a close configuration of large screen video monitors, hidden high-definition cameras strategically placed to create the appearance of direct eye contact, consistent furniture arrangements across locations, and limited user interaction with the technology. All the participant has to do is walk into the room, and a life-like meeting between participants across the U.S. or the globe can begin. As you might imagine, this type of video conferencing system is at the high-end of the solutions available on the market today. This is due in part to the high qu
Psychology dictates that there are certain key elements that allow for effective communication and interaction between two or more individuals. How successfully we relate to one another depends greatly upon eye-to-eye contact. Unfortunately, with most of today’s teleconferencing options, this key element is lost due to poorly placed cameras. Business relationships can flounder as a result. But this doesn’t have to be the case. Enter True Telepresence that allows eye-to-eye contact between individuals while conferencing. When a person has the experience of being in a location which they are not actually in through the use of technology, it is called telepresence. The idea behind behind telepresence is that the person experiencing it should be feel fully submerged in the distant location, being able to act on the environment to make changes, and feeling as though he or she is actually there. This is different from virtual reality, although much of the same technology may be used, because telepresence involves interaction with a real world location, not a fictional space. As a concept, telepresence started to take flight in the early 1990s, when several companies started to develop technology which would help people feel more connected with a distant environment. Originally, many companies conceived of telepresence as a way for families to communicate, but the uses in the business world were quickly realized. Companies which use telepresence can communicate rapidly, reaching important decisions quickly a
Telepresence refers to a set of technologies which allow a person to feel as if they were present, to give the appearance that they were present, or to have an effect, at a location other than their true location. Telepresence requires that the senses of the user, or users, are provided with such stimuli as to give the feeling of being in that other location. Additionally, the user(s) may be given the ability to affect the remote location. In this case, the user’s position, movements, actions, voice, etc. may be sensed, transmitted and duplicated in the remote location to bring about this effect. Therefore information may be travelling in both directions between the user and the remote location. Telepresence refers to a user interacting with another live, real place, and is distinct from virtual presence, where the user is given the impression of being in a simulated environment.
