What is stock photography?
Stock photography is a collection or archive of images that can be licensed for use. It’s a way for companies or individuals to purchase photographs without having to hire a photographer for a specific shoot. Given that there are billions of photos on Flickr already and we’ve heard all sorts of stories about Flickr members being contacted about selling their photographs, we decided to partner with a stock photography expert, Getty Images. There are lots of commercial entities out there that want to do the right thing, paying Flickr members for their hard work and beautiful, creative photography.
Stock photography is a set of ready images where you would purchase the rights to use the image rather than assigning your own photographers to shoot. The main benefits of digital stock photography are that you see the final image before you license the rights to use them and these images can be licensed immediately. The cost for stock photography, especially Royalty Free images are much lower compared to assignment photography. Stock photography saves you the cost of model, photographer, location, props, art direction and editing cost.

In the photography business there is assignment based work and stock photography. In the case of assignment based work, photographers are hired to shoot for clients. Stock photography differs from assignment based work in that a photographer shoots based on varying specifications in hope of generating images that can be marketed through a stock photo agency or a photo library. Zero Dean does both types of work.
Stock photography is photography that is intended to be used for either commercial or editorial purposes such as advertisements, brochures, articles, and product packaging. It is most commonly purchased and used by graphic designers, artists and typographers. Depending on the license type associated with each purchase, the extent of use varies in accordance with the rules of the specific license.
