What is staking?
Staking involves marking a section of land to claim the sole right to prospect for minerals and the statutory privilege to later apply for a lease. Traditionally, staking takes the form of four posts, one placed in each corner of the claim, created by cutting a tree on the site into a post. The claim is then registered with the provincial mining recorder. To minimize the impact on the land, the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry (MNDMF) encourages prospectors to bring their own claim posts where physically possible.
