What is so bad about the refrigerant?
Refrigerants containing chlorofluorocarbons (CFC), halons, carbon tetrachloride, and methyl chloroform are restricted because of the risk of depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer through the release of chlorine and bromine. Depletion of the ozone layer results in increased UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface, which in turn can lead to a greater chance of cataracts, skin cancer, and immune suppression.
