Wayne Smith’s “Under Me Sleng Teng” was created by King Jammy in the year 1985 on a Casio CZ-series synthesizer and is normally identified as the seminal ragga song. “Sleng Teng” augmented Jammy’s popularity to a large extent, and quite a few other producers quickly launched their personal editions of the riddim, along with many other different vocalists. Ragga is regularly applied as a synonym for dancehall reggae, but more characteristically, it is applied for a dancehall with a deejay chatting instead of singing on top of the “riddim”.
