What is ProvideX?
As a derivative of the Business Basic platform of the middle 1980’s, ProvideX is a computer language that works on a number of different operating systems and helps to provide the basis for an interface on a number of essential applications and components. Building on the principles of BASIC (from which Business Basic was derived), ProvideX continues to adapted over the years, increasing the scope of its functionality to meet the innovations that have occurred since the advent of the personal computer. While originally configured as a programming language with a focus on business related applications, ProvideX quickly began to broaden into other types of applications as well. Early on, ProvideX proved to be an excellent vehicle for use with such components as presentation layering and interface protocols, as well as in the management and manipulation of file systems. ProvideX is an environment that is designed to allow for the development of on-line application programs. Its development language ‘ProvideX Basic’ is primarily designed for use in business applications as it is oriented towards integer math and values with two decimal points (monetary values). The language includes a file/database handler that provides keyed file access with up to 16 different keys, file and record locking, and an easy to use interface for terminal and printer output. For someone who has worked in Basic or Business Basic before, ProvideX Basic should be easy to learn. Many instructions used in other Basic systems are also found in ProvideX Basic but the language does have its unique properties. Before writing programs using this language it is suggested that the user review this manual and the detailed directive descriptions.
ProvideX is a complete business application development environment written by Mike King and gang at Best Software Canada (formerly known as Sage Canada, and before that Sybex/BBicon). It includes their Nomads, WindX, and JavX products. It is the preferred Business Basic of Nth Dimension.
