What is Polygraph?
Today, polygraph testing remains the most precise means of developing and verifying the truth, pre-detecting highly potential deceptions and/or detecting deception. A polygraph examination or lie detector test is a technique used widely by private and government agencies in the US, Australia, Singapore and other countries for criminal/security investigations, recruitment and staff appraisal. It is a highly technical and skilled process, relying on the use of specialist equipment linked to considerable training and experience on the part of the operator. The term “poly-graph” means “many-writings” and it refers to the manner in which selected physiological activities are simultaneously recorded. A Polygraph instrument measures at least three physiological reactions; respiratory system (breathing pattern), cardio-vascular activity (blood pressure and blood volume) and galvanic skin response (sweat gland activity). When administrated by a competent examiner the Polygraph test is one of the most accurate means available to determine truth and deception.
The word polygraph itself means simply “many writings”. What we today refer to as a polygraph is a scientific instrument that is capable of simultaneously recording your body physiology. The polygraphist scores the polygraph charts numerically. He analyzes the physiological data to the relevant questions that were asked and renders an opinion as to whether or not that the client has given answer that can be supported by research. There are three opinions: Deception INDICATED (DI); No Deception Indication (NDI) and Inconclusive (No Opinion).
