Plea Negotiation = Plea Bargain. If you are charged with a serious crime (i.e.: Assault With the Intent to Rob) and are going to be brought to trial – and have a good chance of being convicted – you could offer to plead to lesser offense which carries less jail time (i.e.: Simple Assault). OR – You are a career burglar and have committed lots of burglaries, many of which may still be unsolved since the police can’t link you to them. You can offer to admit to all of them but plead guilty to just one offense in exchange for a lighter sentence. That has the effect of “solving’ all of them PLUS saving the state the cost of a trial.
