What is patina?
Patina is the layer of zinc hydroxycarbonate that forms on the surface of the zinc when it is exposed, in the presence of water, to the oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air. The patina consists of a compact protective layer, which adheres to the zinc beneath it in rainwater and protects the zinc from any later atmospheric corrosion.
