What is OEM software?
OEM software is a full version (non-upgrade) which includes only the CD-ROM, the Certificate of Authenticity (COA), and the product key codes. These elements are all you need to load and run the software, and it will run exactly the same as the version that comes packaged in a box for retail. OEM software does not include a box or comprehensive manual. We only recommend OEM software if you are highly technically inclined, as it is not covered for technical support by the manufacturer. All OEM products are labeled as such. Please note that OEM products may not, in most cases, be used to upgrade from a previous version. However, OEM software is eligible for future upgrades.
OEM packaging, which stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer, is a full version 100% genuine software which comes in either a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM format and includes a manufacturer serial key code for installation. Under the OEM license, the software is usually shipped with a piece of hardware. The packaging is raw(meaning it won’t win any design awards) and stripped down to a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM sealed in a paper sleeve or cardboard flat pack and does not include a manual or any technical support from the manufacturer.
The software is made available to ‘system builders’ and by Microsoft definition it is an “original equipment manufacturer, an assembler, refurbisher, or pre-installer of software on computer systems.” Most users of OEM software on eBay fall under the last category of those that install software. “Local OEM software packs are intended for PC and server manufacturers or assemblers ONLY. They are not intended for distribution to end users unless the end users are acting as local OEMs by assembling their own PC. ” http://oem.microsoft.com/downloads/mosb_productguide/licensing/packaging.
