What is Newborn Milia?
Nearly half of all babies have milia. While it may upset some parents to see their perfect little baby with not-so-perfect skin, there is nothing to worry about. These tiny cysts are largely thought to be due to pre-mature sebaceous (oil) glands. The pearly white (sometimes yellow), round bumps are often confused with baby acne. Unlike red, baby acne that develops after several weeks, babies are often born with this skin condition. They are most often found on the face but sometimes elsewhere on the body. When these benign bumps are found on the roof of the mouth they are called, “Epstein Pearls”. They form when dead skin cells get trapped within a pocket of skin. Sometimes they become fluid filled, but there is no need for concern.
