What is NetBIOS?

0

NetBIOS (or Network Basic Input Output System) is an application, or program, that is used by Microsoft Networking. One common use of NetBIOS is to allow the sharing of files and printers between computers on a Local Area Network (LAN). However, if you are connected to the Internet and using file and print sharing through NetBIOS, you may be exposed to unnecessary security risks. The vast majority of systems do not need NetBIOS to connect to the Internet. However, some older cable modem systems may require some components of NetBIOS (specifically, NetBIOS Name and NetBIOS Datagram).
