What is Myofascial Release?
This refers to a group of techniques designed to release adhered sections of connective tissue called fascia. Fascia is a continuous sheath that surrounds all tissues of the body. Restriction in one area can therefore cause problems in another, seemingly unrelated area. The treatment aim is to restore postural alignment, range of motion, circulatory flow and to decrease pain.
Myofascial Release is a very effective hands-on technique that provides sustained pressure into myofascial restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. The theory of Myofascial Release requires an understanding of the fascial system(or connective tissue). The fascia is a specialized system of the body that has an appearance similar to a spider’s web or a sweater. Myofascial Release is a technique that requires special training above and beyond basic massage and physical therapy curriculums.
Myofascial Release is a whole body, hands on approach to treatment, producing a profound healing effect upon the body tissues, eliminating pain, and restoring motion. The theory of Myofascial Release requires an understanding of the fascial system. Fascia is a tough connective tissue which spreads throughout the body in a three dimensional web from head to foot without interruption. The fascia surrounds every muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel, and organs of the body, all the way down to the cellular level. Myofascial Release techniques releases the tissues that are bound up, contracted or obstructed from trauma, repetitive stress or just poor habits of posture and movement, that leads to distortions and dysfunctions in the fascial system.
