What is my role as a Selecting Official and/or Subject Matter Expert (SME)?
As the selecting official or SME, your role in the process is critical. You will identify the competencies required for your vacancy announcement. The competencies you identify will be in the form of questions (rather than KSA’s) that the applicant must answer. You, with the assistance of the HR Specialist, will determine the importance of the competency-based questions by assigning a numerical weight to specific questions. Applicants are rated and referred based their responses to the position-specific questions.
As the selecting official or SME, your role in the process is critical. You are the subject matter expert and possess the breadth of knowledge, experience and skills needed to identify the competencies to fill the position. As the Manager, it is critical that you take the leadership role in serving as the SME and work collaboratively with your HR Specialist in the development of competency based questions and rating criteria.
