What is Murano (Murrina)?
Murano is an island which is a part of the city of Venice, Italy. The word “Murrina” is a derivative of the word “Murano,” and is a general term used in Venice to identify a special glass production technique that has been a practice in Murano for over 700 years. The technique is also known as Millefiori which means thousand flowers. Technically, Millefiori is the name for specially designed glass rods used to make the finished products, Murrina. Millefiori rods are typically one foot in length and can be as small as 3 millimeters in diameter. Millefiori rods are cut into small pieces and placed together in a mold to display their beautifully-patterned cross sections. Using special glass production technique, the results are Murrina jewelry, each design with a unique pattern and style.
