What is meant by TLEV, LEV, ULEV, CAA?
[back] You may read this on vehicles and see them on stickers that the auto manufacturers have put on vehicles. These are emission standards that are required of or the standard that the vehicle has been calibrated and built to. CAA stands for Clean Air Act. This is the first requirement of emission reduction since 1980 and was enacted in the early 90’s. Some vehicles, mostly low volume specialty vehicles are still only calibrated to CAA standards. TLEV stands for Transitional Low Emission Vehicle. To not put a large burden on the auto industry all at one time a TLEV standard was enacted as a transition to Lower emissions. LEV stands for Low Emission Vehicle. LEV is the current prevailing standard for most of the vehicles built now in the early 2000’s.
