What is lesson study?
Lesson study is a process for teachers to systematically examine their practice. Teachers work collaboratively on a small number of “study lessons.” They examine planning and teaching and they observe and critique one another’s lessons. The teachers select an overarching goal and related research question to guide the study lessons. Teachers jointly draw up a detailed plan for the lesson. One teacher teaches the lesson as other group members observe it. Then the group meets to discuss their observations. They may revise the lesson; then another teacher implements while being observed. The group reconvenes to discuss the observed instruction. Finally, the teachers produce a report of what their study lessons have taught them, particularly with respect to their research question. Based on summary on the Lesson Study Research Group.
