What is LASIK?
[back to top] Laser in-situ Keratomileusis, or LASIK, has become one of the most popular surgical methods for patients to improve their vision. For some patients, improvement of the vision is seen shortly after the procedure. For patients who are nearsighted, the cornea is reshaped so that it less steep. The reshaping reduces the power of the eye and thus reduces your nearsighted prescription. For patients who are farsighted, the cornea is reshaped so that it is steeper. The reshaping increases the power of the eye and also reduces your farsighted prescription. Astigmatism describes the shape of the eye. If you have astigmatism, your eye is shaped more like a football instead of a baseball. The Allegretto Laser is approved to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
LASIK is a surgical procedure that uses a cool beam of light to gently reshape the cornea (the surface of the eye) and improve vision. A thin layer of the cornea is lifted to create a protective flap. The laser then emits a beam that has enough energy to break the bonds between the molecules that make up the tissue on your eye’s surface. Because it is a photochemical, and not a heating process, it allows the surgeon to sculpt very precise amounts of corneal tissue without any damage to adjacent tissue. The idea is to remove enough tissue to flatten the cornea (for nearsightedness), steepen the cornea (for farsightedness), and/or smooth out corneal irregularities (for astigmatism). The goal is to shape the cornea so it does a better job of focusing images onto the retina, for sharper vision. The flap is then returned for a quick, natural recovery. Patients experience little discomfort and can usually return to work the next day.

LASIK is an acronym for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. It refers to a particular form of refractive surgery designed to correct nearsighted, farsighted, and astigmatic vision with the use of a microkeratome and an excimer laser. LASIK was first performed in clinical trials in 1995. Dr. S. Scott Stapleton was one of 13 primary investigators in the FDA study leading to the first approval of commercial LASIK in the United States.
LASIK, also known as laser vision correction, is a surgical procedure that can reduce a persons dependency on glasses or contact lenses by permanently changing the shape of the cornea. LASIK uses an Excimer Laser (an ultraviolet laser) to precisely remove corneal tissue to correct the shape for better focusing.
