What is indexing?
Indexing is a technical term for the process by which Ask.com Desktop Search scans the files on your computer and makes a special list of them in order to help you easily find them later. As you save or add new documents to your hard drive, or send and receive emails, Ask.com Desktop Search will automatically index these items. Click “Desktop Search Settings” on the home page for advanced indexing options, like excluding certain files or folders from your search index.
In data management, the most common method for keeping track of data on a disk. Indexes are directory listings maintained by the OS, DBMS or the application. An index of files contains an entry for each file name and the location of the file. An index of records has an entry for each key field (account no., name, etc.) and the location of the record.
