What is Hydrilla?
Hydrilla is a non-native aquatic plant that is spreading rapidly in many Texas water bodies. This fast growing plant is native to Africa, Australia, and parts of Asia but was introduced to Florida in 1960 via the aquarium trade. It is now well established in the southern states, as well as in 85 Texas reservoirs. Hydrilla was first discovered in Lake Austin in July 1999, when Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) documented approximately 23 acres of the plants. By July 2000, growth had increased to 200 acres. This rapid growth rate is typical of hydrilla and can potentially impact all aspects of lake use, including recreation, drinking water treatment and hydropower generation.
