What is granite?
Granite is an igneous rock that is formed by magma (hot liquid rock) that has cooled under pressure deep within the earth. Granite is extremely hard and heat resistant and is therefore the first choice in countertop material. Granite has a glass-like surface and is virtually non-porous which makes it stain resistant. Granite is composed of quartz, feldspars, mica, hornblende, and a small amount of other minerals. Granite can be found in nearly every color and depending on how the stone was cooled within the earth, can have various patterning from a very uniform “static” look, to a random, wavy pattern which we refer to as having “movement”.
Granite is a coarse grained crystalline igneous rock composed primarily of quartz and feldspar. It forms from slowly cooling magma that is subjected to extreme pressures deep beneath the earth’s surface. There are different grades of granite determined by color, crystal formation, and surface polish quality. When determining the proper granite for your countertop of project, we make sure to select and import only top quality material.
Granite, from the Italian granito (meaning grained), is a type of volcanic rock containing crystallized minerals such as feldspar, quartz and mica. Formed deep within the earth’s crust, the colors and patterns of granite are determined by the minerals, their varying concentrations, temperature, pressure and the rate at which the rocks cool down on their ascent to the earth’s surface. As this extremely hot liquid material rises and cools, it forms a crystalline, granular structure, hence the term granite. Granite and other granite-like stones are formed of hard minerals such as quarts, feldspar and mica, which are fused together into a very hard stone ideal for kitchen counters because its polish is resistant to household acids such as citrus and vinegar and is hard enough to resist scratching from knives and pots and pans. It is this range of colors and patterns that make granite such an appealing and unique material to use for kitchen worktops, tiles and flooring within the home.
