What is Energy Star?
Energy Star is a government-backed program helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. Introduced by the Environmental Protection Agency as a voluntary training program that aimed to identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it was later extended to cover new homes and commercial buildings. Because Energy Star ratings are awarded to the 25% most energy-efficient organizations, this rating should become more difficult to achieve over time, because, unlike LEED ratings, it is a relative rather than absolute score.
