What is Energy Star?
ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. Energy efficient choices can save families about a third on their energy bill with similar savings of greenhouse gas emissions, without sacrificing features, style or comfort. ENERGY STAR helps you make the energy efficient choice. If looking for new household products, look for ones that have earned the ENERGY STAR. They meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and US Department of Energy. If looking for a new home, look for one that has earned the ENERGY STAR. If looking to make larger improvements to your home, EPA offers tools and resources to help you plan and undertake projects to reduce your energy bills and improve home comfort. Energy Star is a US governmental program – administered by the department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency with the cooperation of manufacturers. This alliance has been designed to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels through the education of consumers. The program covers many different types of products. Windows and doors can only carry the Energy Star label if they are tested by an independent laboratory through the National Fenestration Rating Council program and meet specific, predetermind U-value ratings. ENERGY STAR® was first introduced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 as a voluntary labeling program designed to identify and promote energy efficient products that reduce carbon dioxide emissions. back to top • When I first used a Compact Fluorescent Lamp, it interfered with my TV. Why is that? CFL’s may interfere with a variety of devices because they use the same wavelengths. If you find that they interfere, move the CFL away, or plug the electronic device into another outlet. back to top • Can I use my CFL outdoors? Sure, as long as it is in an enclosed fixture. CFL’s have a harder time starting when it is below 32 degrees, so the bulb may not come to full brightness. back to top • Can I use my CFL in an indoor ceiling fixture? It is not recommended that you use CFL’s in an enclosed indoor ceiling fixture.

ENERGY STAR guidelines are used in conjunction with a variety of building materials, including windows and patio doors. Over the past 10 years, ENERGY STAR guidelines have helped double the efficiency of windows they endorse.
The international ENERGY STAR symbol is a simple way for consumers to identify products that are among the most energy-efficient on the market. Only manufacturers and retailers whose products meet the ENERGY STAR criteria can label their products with this symbol. Choosing an ENERGY STAR-labelled product over a conventional model could save you hundreds of dollars in energy costs.
