Electro-luminescent backlight means the whole display lights up. I don’t know the actual technology, but I believe it uses less battery power than the normal digital watch light. This is anecdotal — my watch battery lasts much longer on the watch where I have that kind of display. Glow-in-the-dark displays do not use any power. I can’t provide an opinion on “clunky.” I’m a guy. I like big watches. It doesn’t appear clunky to me. (I’ve had that watch before.) That particular watch is extremely durable, and can probably deal with physical stresses that you’ll never subject it to.
