What is Earth Day?
Earth Day is an annual observance, the goal of which is to raise awareness about our environment. The first Earth Day, a nationwide grassroots protest and teach-in that attracted more than 20 million people, was held on April 22, 1970. U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, the founder of Earth Day, was concerned about the Earth’s future and wanted to raise national attention to environmental issues. Earth Day is a Birthday!! Just like a birthday is a special day to celebrate a person, Earth Day is a special day that celebrates the Earth. Earth Day was born on April 22, 1970, in San Francisco, California. Every year, America and over 100 different countries join together in the celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd. Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide. On Earth Day, we remember to appreciate nature and learn ways to protect our environment. On April 22, 1970, people across the country united to validate the importance of the environment and take action. Earth Day was initiated by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, who said he was determined to “forcibly thrust the issue of environmental quality and resources conservation into the political dialogue of the nation.” He manifested the nation’s environmental cause through what started as a ‘teach-in’ to protest the government’s environmental ignorance. His accomplishment in the environmental arena eventually led to fundamental legislation, including the Environmental Policy Act (1969), the Clean Air Act (1970), the Clean Water Act (1977) and fuel efficiency standards for automobiles. For over 30 years, on April 22nd, millions of people have united to heed this urgent call to action and celebrate the environment.
