What is datura?
Datura has been variously known as thorn-apple, prickly-burr, Jimsonweed, devil’s weed, or toloache. It is a sprawling herbaceous shrub with fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers which stand erect, and (usually) spiny seedpods. Some Daturas are perennials and some annuals. There are at least fifteen distinct species with many varieties as Daturas have been cultivated for centuries for their showy flowers and medicinal properties. Most originated in the New World, with the two notable exceptions of D. metel and D. ferox which originated in Eurasia. Daturas are members of the family Solanaceae which contains other ethnobotanicals such as tobacco and mandrake, and other common vegetables like eggplants, tomatoes, and peppers.
Most drugs are naturally occurring plants that are processed in a certain way to make them more potent. One plant that started being used as a drug in the late 60’s is Datura. Datura which is commonly referred to as Jimsonweed, thorn-apple, angel’s trumpet, devil’s trumpet, loco weed, and Jamestown weed is very dangerous. Datura is usually ground up and brewed into tea, or sometimes it is smoked in combination with marijuana, or by itself. However smoking Datura does not produce the same hallucinations that come with drinking or eating it. The Effects of Datura The chemicals found in Datura are similar to the chemicals found in ‘shrooms, but the chemicals in Datura are much more concentrated. Taking Datura in small doses can calm a person down and make them sleepy. In larger doses the drug can cause very vivid hallucinations. Other symptoms of Datura are dry mouth, headaches, nausea, fever, high blood pressure, blurred vision, difficulty swallowing and speaking, confusion, sensitivity
