What is data transfer?

Data transfer (also referred to as data traffic) is the information travelling to and from your web site. When someone requests a page from your web site (ie. by typing in your domain name and your home page appears), this is referred to as outbound traffic, as the web server that you web site is being hosted on is sending this information out to the visitor. Inbound traffic also contributes towards your data transfer limit, and includes such things as: • Uploading a new page or making changes to your web site, as you are sending information to the web server; and • A visitor inputting their details into a form on your web site, such as a Request More Information or Contact Us form, and submitting it, as again, this is sending information to the web server that your web site files reside on.

In general, any outward-bound traffic from a web site is considered to be data transfer. Every time a person visits your website every web page, image, midi file, mp3, PDF, QuickTime video and other related files are viewed, data transfer is generated. Our web hosting plans include a generous amount of free data transfer, which should be more than enough for most sites. Additional data transfer beyond the threshold of most sites can be purchased at a relatively small charge to support the increased traffic.

Simply put, data transfer is the process of moving or converting computer data from one media, operating system, application, or platform to another. This can involve just taking the data off of one disk drive and putting it on another, or onto CD-ROM.

All activity online is about transferring data. A web page is in essence a file, and when you visit a web page you are downloading that file, and everything included on the page, such as the pictures. You may also send/receive email, download files from the web, stream video, play games, or upload files. All this activity transfers data back and forth in various amounts.
