What is curare poision?

Curare is a plant alkaloid used in poison arrows and blowpipe darts by hunting natives in the tropical rain forests in South America, Africa and Asia. It was also extensively used as a muscle relaxant in anesthesia, but has now been superseded by more potent and safer alternatives. I suppose someone could be poisoned if he were to be unfortunate enough to encounter one the hunters. Alternatively as part of a deliberate murder/assassination by an enemy who had access to the poison. The entire musculature including the diaphragm would relax and the person will die of acute respiratory failure.
