What is cupping?
Using a flame (such as from an ignited cotton ball) to warm air inside a round cupping glass which is then applied directly to the skin (mainly on the back) to apply suction to acu-points and to remove toxins from the skin. This technique is used for muscle injury, joint pain, headaches and acute bronchial congestion.
Cupping is a therapy that stimulates the flow of blood and Qi to the superficial muscle layers. It is used to break up blockages of Qi, for sore muscles, tension, neck pain, and the common cold. In this therapy, your acupuncturist will place small glass “cups” over specific areas on your body. A vacuum is created under the cup using heat or suction. Sometimes your acupuncturist may slide the cups over certain areas, or just leave them still. You may leave the office looking as though a large octopus gave you a big hug. But don’t worry; the slight redness will dissipate quickly.
Cupping is a technique used to determine the quality (taste and aroma) of a particular sample of coffee. Preparation methods are standardized for each sample, and the coffee aroma is inhaled and the sample then tasted, often side-by-side with other samples. Importers and roasters use this technique in order to evaluate batches of green beans for both quality and sensory description. Cuppers will usually fill out detailed evaluation forms that describe multiple aspects of the coffee that they are cupping. Many feel that cupping is more art than science, but a specific technique can be useful for those new to the concept.
Cupping is a modality that uses a partial vacuum in a specially designed metal, wood, glass or plastic cup. When applied to the surface of the skin the underlying soft-tissue is drawn to the cup. The cups may be moved to provide a form of massage. Cupping is unique in its ability to provide a negative pressure to the soft-tissue. It is used for low backache, sprains, and soft-tissue injuries.
