What is color blind casting?
It’s casting that doesn’t pay any attention to race. (For example, the understudy for the title role in Snow White is Black.) And very often you will see stories in our folk tales plays be told without a member of the ethnic they came from on stage. We’ve had a mixed Black and white cast telling Latino folk tales, and a mixed Latino and white cast telling African folk tales. Notice that in these cases we are telling tales, not being specific historical people. It’s partly done because good talent with daytime availability is not always easy to find, let alone good daytime talent of a specific ethnicity. It’s also done to help teach tolerance and to help break down ethnic stereotyping. It’s related to sex free casting. Whenever we have a role that is not in love with another role, we use the first really good talent we find, not caring whether it is a woman or a man.
