What is Certificate of Insurance (COI) and when should I obtain one?

[Top] A Certificate of Insurance (COI) is a document supplied by a third party’s insurer or broker which provides evidence of insurance coverage and the levels of that coverage. Any third party entering into a contract with UCSF is required to show evidence of insurance through a COI. Typically, UCSF provides a similar certification to outside parties in contracts where both organizations have invested a lot of time or resources. Occasionally, UCSF asks to be added to third parties’ coverage as an “additional insured” which increases protections for UCSF. You should consult with RMIS or Business Contract Services before requesting a COI. Outside vendors may be able to use UC Tracker to submit their COIs.
