What is baby bottle decay?
Infants and young children frequently drink liquids that contain sugar, which can cause tooth decay. Sugary liquids include breast milk, formula, fruit juice (with or without added sugar) and other sweetened drinks. Baby bottle decay can occur when a child is put down for a nap or at night with a bottle containing one of these sugary liquids. The liquid pools around the teeth creating plaque bacteria and acids that attack the teeth. If a child must have a bottle to fall asleep, use water instead. After each feeding, wipe the child’s teeth and gums with a damp cloth.
