AutoCAD was one of the first Computer Aided Design programs to be made available on personal computers. It is built to help people design buildings, products, or public spaces, without having to draw up plans by hand. It was released in 1982 by Autodesk, Inc., and offered a personal solution to software that was before then released only for larger workstations. While CAD programs prior to AutoCAD required massive amounts of computing power in the form of gigantic computers, AutoCAD streamlined its operating and optimized it for the IBM PC, allowing people to work from home or on their own work computers. Through the 1980s, AutoCAD functioned mostly by using simple lines and circles, and text overlays, to set up custom objects. Beginning in the 1990s, AutoCAD began utilizing more robust custom object features, built with an Advanced Programming Interface using C++. AutoCAD is the leading 2D and 3D computer-aided design software application. The software is used by architects, designers, CAD technicians, engineers and project managers to design commercial and residential structures and environments. AutoCAD allows users to design and visualize ideas with tools implemented to increase productivity. These tools include a ribbon user interface, action recorder, Autodesk ViewCube and SteeringWheels, menu browser, layer dialog and quick view. The AutoCAD ribbon user interface is customizable and expandable in order to meet each user’s and company’s needs. Autodesk ViewCube 3D navigation rotates and orients solid or surface models in AutoCAD. The SteeringWheels tool enables easy access to pan, zoom, center and orbit commands. While AutoCAD is available in several languages, such as English, German and Japanese, there is no current version available for Mac computers.
