On Australia Day we come together as a nation celebrate what’s great about Australia and being Australian. It’s the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It’s the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future.
It’s the anniversary of the arrival of convicts. It’s one of those days that has a significance largely unrelated to the actual date. Most of us look at it just as our national day, rather than specifically as the day a bunch of criminals turned up in New South Wales. Particularly here in South Australia, which was never a convict colony, the date itself doesn’t mean much. The point is that it’s a day in recognition of our country. The objection many people (particularly, but not exclusively, Aborigines) have to the date is that the colonisation of Australia was actually illegal under customary international law and led to the genocide of most of the indigenous population. Personally I would be perfectly happy to see the date changed to something that isn’t such a black mark on our nation’s history, but like I said, the actual date isn’t the point to most Australians.
