What is a WHPA?

In order to protect our drinking water wells from contamination, we need to know where the wells are drawing their water from. A Well Head Protection Area (WHPA) defines the area around a well that is recharging or contributing water to that well. WHPAs are based on the time taken for a drop of water to travel from a point on the ground surface or in the aquifer to a pumping well. The study team delineated the: 0 – 2 year TOT, 2 – 5 year TOT, 5 – 10 year TOT and 10 – Limit of Capture Zone TOT for each municipal well in the County.
