Unless you reside in a warm climate, you may not be familiar with a Palmetto Bug. The name might sound pleasant but Palmetto Bugs are what most homeowners would describe as a nuisance. A Palmetto Bug is actually an American Cockroach with wings that grows up to 1 ½ inches in length. Of course, many Lowcountry residents would claim that they’ve seen Palmetto Bugs grow to much larger sizes. They’re most commonly found in warm, moist climates and are considered scavengers, because they will munch on most anything. Although most consider Palmetto Bugs just an annoyance, they can bring infectious bacteria and allergens into the home. This cockroach in particular us one of the largest species of cockroaches and can grow to be up to 2 inches in length and are a reddish brown in color along with a yellowish line behind the head. For the most part the adult Palmetto Bug does have wings and can fly, whereas immature or baby roaches may have the appearance of adults but do not have wings. A Palmetto Bug is really just a roach, although they tend to be large thanks to the favorable climate in Florida. They do live throughout Florida and other places in the South. I don’t know why they try to fly on you, though I suspect it is either: (1) they are attracted by artificial scents such as perfume; or (2) light confuses them and they just fly around all crazy.
