What is a pagan?
A Pagan is someone who follows an earth-based spirituality inspired by or reconstructed from a pre-Christian European pagan religion. The word ‘Pagan’ comes from the Latin words ‘paganus’, which means a ‘country-dweller’/ ‘rural citizen’, and ‘pagani’ meaning ‘country’ or ‘rural district’. It was used as a term of derision in a Christian inscription of the early fourth century of the common era to describe rural civilians of the Roman world who had not converted to Christianity. Modern Pagans have reclaimed this term to define a religious movement characterised by diversity of spirituality and belief and by tolerance of religious diversity.
