What is a matron or chaperone?
A Matron supervises a child who is taking part in performances for the duration of the work. They may be the child’s parent, teacher or a person approved by the Local Authority.. To apply to become a Matron you can fill in the online form Application for approval as a Matron and read the accompanying guidance or you can call the Child Employment Team on 01483 517838. It is a legal requirement that whenever children of compulsory school age are engaged in public performances or entertainment under a licence issued by the Local Authority, they must be supervised at all times by an approved matron, unless they are under the direct supervision of either parent or an agreed tutor. It is clear that matrons hold a key role in ensuring that the experience a child gains whilst engaged in such performances or entertainment is one that they enjoy and find beneficial.
