What is a Life Event?
A family status change (or life event) is described as a change in marital status (such as marriage, divorce, death of spouse, etc.), change in number of dependents (birth, adoption, death of a dependent), change in employment (termination or commencement of employment by employee, spouse, or dependent), change in work schedule (reduction or increase in hours of employee, spouse or dependent including a change from part-time to full-time), dependent change in status (dependent either satisfies or ceases to satisfy the requirements for coverage due to attainment of certain age, etc.), change in residence or worksite (a change in the place of residence or work of the employee, spouse, or dependent). If any one of the above changes occurs, employees have 30 days from the event date to report the event to the benefits office with proper documentation. Changes may then be made to the employees benefits package.
