What is a Land Trust or Land Conservancy?
Land trusts likeTar River Land Conservancy are grassroots nonprofit organizations that permanently protect drinking water, wildlife and other natural resources important to our local communities. Land trusts also protect working land – such as farms and forests – that are important to our rural economies and way of life. While some land trusts achieve their land and water protection goals by purchasing property outright, Tar River Land Conservancy primarily works with landowners to place voluntary conservation easements on their land. These easements define the future uses of the property while allowing it to stay in private ownership, be sold, or passed down to heirs. Tar River Land Conservancy staff visits each property we hold an easement on annually to ensure the terms of our easements are being upheld. Tar River Land Conservancy has worked with over 150 individuals, families, businesses, and local governments to place permanent conservation easements on land and protect resources
