The jpg format is a form of graphical file compression used to reduce the size of a graphic file, typicaly at a 10 to 1 ratio, but with little or no loss in image quality. It’s named after the committee that created the standard (the Joint Photographic Experts Group) which issued the standard in 1992. It was certified as an ISO standard in 1994. The standard refers to the codec that defines how the image is compressed into a stream of bytes and is decompressed back again. This standard is best when used with photos and paintings of a natural form with smooth lines. It does not do well with line drawings.
Jpg is an extension that can usually be created and open by most paint programs, including Microsoft Paint which is the default program in Microsoft Windows or Preview on Mac’s OSX. In computing, JPEG is a commonly used method of lossy compression for photographic images. The term “JPEG” is an acronym for the Joint Photographic Experts Group which created the standard. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality. JPEG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality. JPEG/Exif is the most common image format used by digital cameras and other photographic image capture devices; along with JPEG/JFIF, it is the most common format for storing and transmitting photographic images on the World Wide Web.
