What is a JACS code?

0

All subject areas studied at UK Universities and Higher Education Institutions are identified by a JACS code (Joint Academic Coding System code, as set up by the Higher Education Statistics Agency). Your University will advise you of the JACS code for the area you wish to research. This may be a 2, 3 or 4 digit code. To assess whether you need to apply for ATAS clearance you only need to look at the first letter and number. (For example, for a code B130, you will need to select B1 at the registration stage). However, when you fill in the application form you will need the full code (e.g. B130). We are not able to advise you which JACS code is attached to your area of research. It is very important that the JACS code matches your area of study; you should not try to guess. If you do not have the JACS code or the brief description of the research area you need to contact your proposed University.

If you are applying for a programme that requires an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate, you will receive with your offer letter an ATAS Statement containing the relevant JACS code. If you programme does not fall under the ATAS scheme you will not need your programme’s JACS code. If you have any further queries please contact atas@liv.ac.

You will only need a JACS code if you are applying for a programme that requires an ATAS certificate. If this is the case, your offer letter will include an ATAS Statement containing the relevant JACS code. If your programme does not fall under the ATAS scheme, you will not need a JACS code. If you have any further queries please contact atas@liv.ac.uk I did not get my funding/visa, may I defer my offer until next year? It is often possible to defer your offer until the next academic year. Contact your Department as soon as possible to find out if this option is available to you. I have been refused my visa, can you provide me with a letter of support? Applications for visa entry are the sole responsibility of the student. Unfortunately we cannot contact the British Council/Embassy to act or intervene on behalf of a student.
