A Hearing Instrument Specialist (H.I.S.) is a professional who performs hearing testing, amplification selection, dispensing and amplification fitting, as well as instruction and counseling regarding amplification use, for hearing impaired individuals who have been prescribed amplification by an audiologist or physician. They also provide follow-up maintenance and care of hearing devices. Hearing Instrument Specialists usually hold a diploma from community college training programs. Most Hearing Instrument Specialists must also complete an internship program before qualifying to work in Ontario and must be a member of the Association of Hearing Instrument Practitioners (AHIP) of Ontario. As members of AHIP, Hearing Instrument Specialists are required to maintain their professional competency through continuing education, which assures the public that members of AHIP are committed to meeting the highest standards of the profession.
