What is a deferment? • To “defer” means to put off.
When charges are deferred, the defendant is on a probationary period. If he or she does not receive any other traffic violations in the city of La Junta and pays the deferment costs in full (juveniles are also required to attend traffic school), the Municipal Court will then dismiss the charges and the violation will not be reported to the DMV. • The City Attorney has outlined terms for which a violator may “plea bargain” on traffic cases. The average term is six months. • A violator may defer if there are no prior offenses in the city; has a relatively clean traffic record and there have been no prior deferred judgments given by the City of La Junta at any time. • Adult drivers must pay $75.00 plus $15.00 Court costs. • Minor drivers pay $50.00 plus $15.00 Court costs and attend traffic school within the six month period.
