What is a DBA filing?
A DBA (doing business as) filing is an official registration of a business name with a government agency. A DBA name is also called an assumed name, trade name, or fictitious business name. DBAs allow sole proprietors to conduct business under a name other than their own personal name and let corporations or LLCs to do business under a name different from the corporation’s name. Example of a DBA filing : Sad Dame Who Saying is an Oil Well Owner working as a sole proprietor and wants to name his business “Leave My Oil Alone”. Sad Dame Who Saying would register his DBA name “Leave My Oil Alone” with the appropriate governmental agency and would be the owner of that DBA name so long as others, such as, perhaps, George, The Boss, does not also have the same dba name, and does not sue him for using his DBA name.
