What may I expect from a conservator? A conservator should always ask to see your painting in person before offering an opinion about its condition, or giving you an estimate for the cost of treatment. A restorer who gives an estimate without seeing a work of art, or offers an opinion based on a photograph, may not have made an accurate assessment of its condition, or have considered all options for treatment. A reputable conservator will examine the painting with the naked eye and may recommend that further specialist assessment is required – x-ray or microscopy, for example – see also Photography and Technical Analysis.
