For warriors, a battleaxe is an axe for use in war, either one-handed or two-handed and usually having blades on both sides of the head, though in one varient there is a blade on one side and a poker on the other. This was generally a powerful slicing weapon, reasonably light with a sharp, narrow blade and a long axis (the handle) for creating slicing momentum, and good therefore for cutting through armor to the body. This required less metalwork than a sword, but was vulnerable along its wooden handle, which often itself needed metal reinforcement and armor.
