What happens when a person is arrested?
Individuals who are arrested in Carver County are usually brought to the jail for booking. Once they arrive at the jail, the arresting officer will complete paperwork, interviews and any tests that may be required. Then the arrestee is processed for intake or release by the jail. If you know of someone who has been arrested, please wait 1 to 2 hours after the initial arrest to contact the jail to see if they are in custody. Due to transport times and the work that is done by the arresting officer, we often do not have information on a new intake for a period of time. You are welcome to call 952.361.1145 to check on the status of a new arrest. They will be allowed access to the phone after they are booked in to notify people of their arrest and to make appropriate arrangements. The booking process includes gathering demographic data, digital fingerprints, photographs of the individual, and allowing the initial phone call.
After you are arrested, you will be taken before a District Court commissioner who determines if probable cause exists to charge you. The commissioner: ensures that you understand the charges against you and the possible penalties, advises you of your right to an attorney, advises you of your responsibilities in obtaining an attorney, decides whether you should be detained or released pending trial, and determines whether bail should be set. You should provide the commissioner with any information requested.
